French Geodetic Peru Mission
Petikan misi geodetic Paris Academy of Science:
The story of a small band of Frenchmen who sailed to the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1735, and spent the next eight years in the mountains of the Andean Cordillera. They went there to make some geodetic measurements which would conclusively settle the problem of the earth's shape. They left comfortable lives in France in order to further the progress of science.
The mission then settled conclusively a scientific dispute which had divided European scientists for three decades, and it gave man a truer picture of his planet than he had ever possessed before.
