Catatan bacaan buku Discovering Ottoman.

Among the great cities of the past is Isfahan. Another one before Isfahan was Qazvin, Nishapur. 

About Istanbul .. what was its name before? It was Stinpoli, Istinbal, and Islambol.

Stinpoli means to the city or in the city.

Istinbal was the name during the siege by Umayyad Dynasty.

Islambol was clear sign the city become Islamicised.

The name Islambol (اسلامبول lit. 'full of Islam') appeared after the Ottoman conquest of 1453 to express the city's new role as the capital of the Islamic Ottoman Empire. It was first attested shortly after the conquest, and its invention was ascribed by some contemporary writers to Sultan Mehmed II.

Bulagarian (eg, in Sofia) named Istanbul as city where the Tsar Emperor  lived.
