The Venus of Cyrene is a famous second-century Roman marble copy of a Greek statue of the goddess Aphrodite.
Found in 1913 - Italian soldiers and archaeologists found the headless statue at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Cyrene, Libya.
Moved to Rome - Italy took the statue to Rome in 1915 and put it on display in the National Roman Museum.
Returned to Libya - Italy returned the statue to Libya in August 2008 as part of a friendship treaty and a court ruling that recognized colonial-era damages.
Current status - the original statue reportedly disappeared in Libya during recent civil conflicts and now survives mostly through photographs and casts.
