Petikan misi geodetic Paris Academy of Science: The story of a small band of Frenchmen who sailed to the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1735, and spent the next eight years in the mountains of the Andean Cordillera. They went there to make some geodetic measurements which would conclusively settle the problem of the earth's shape. They left comfortable lives in France in order to further the progress of science. Pada satu masa lalu ada perkhidmatan keretapi membawa jemaah haji dibangun oleh pemerintah Ottoman. Keretapi yang dikenal nama Hejaz Railway diguna pakai bermula tahun 1906 (atau 1908?) dan berakhir pada sekitar 1920an. Hejaz Railway menghubug kota Damsyik (Damascus) dengan Madina. Malangnya sistem keretapi Hejaz Railway telah dimusnah ketika berlaku WWI. Pada ketika itu juga berlaku Arab Revolt yang bertujuan menjatuhkan pemerintahan Ottoman. Revolt yang dilancar oleh penguasa Saudi pimpinan Amir Saudi, Sherif Hussein bin Ali. Pemusnahan Hejaz Railway turut dibantu sama oleh pasukan askar Perancis.
